Colwall Greener 2009 review

From Robin Coates

In 2009 we had a really productive year - our 4 (in Bold) main activities were:

The July Open Day with the Big Green Bus joining us following its much valued visit to the Primary School. About 150 people came to the day, we had a big display of electric transport and there is more about in the village. It would be good if we could include some stories of residents’ experience of their electric bikes, scooters and hybrids. The Colwall Car Club is now running well with a steady trickle of new members joining, if you haven’t checked out the benefits for you, get in touch &/or have a look at www.greener.colwall.info/carclub. Transport is about a third of our Carbon Footprint (home energy and food being the other thirds) so we welcome any opportunity to create ways of making it more effective for the village.

Our Home Energy Advice & Assistance Scheme (HEA&AS) has the potential for giving good Carbon Footprint and money saving gains some residents are already reporting warmer more comfortable rooms, lower bills the excitment of seeing that the Solar Thermal tubes are delivering 30 degree hot water on a cold but sunny winters day for free. Our local Solar installer is reporting a steady stream using him to install their systems. We still have a couple of months to spend the (HEA&AS) grant for this financial year and in particular the handyman allowance to help people with draught proofing and loft lagging where there are difficulties that prevent the national contractors from doing the job for you, like moving stuff or existing loft boarding.

There are a couple of householders who asked us to look at their house and we have lost their contact details so if you haven’t heard from us get in contact.

We are also hoping to start Thermal Imaging of homes (with the Energy Group of Transition Malvern Hills TMH) to find the places where the biggest heat losses are, let us know if you would like to join this trial. We have also joined TMH in a Low Carbon Communiities Bid concerning home energy.

The fourth area that we have been heavily involved with is the Transition Malvern Hills initiative both through our own film shows and talks and with them in Malvern and surrounding villages. On the Friday 19th March at 7.30pm in Colwall Village Hall we are doing an event where you can hear more about this very positive way of facing the inevitable future difficulties of adaption to Climate Change & Peak Oil, please join us.

Great events in Colwall

The Colwall Greener open day on Saturday (11th July) dodged the rain showers and saw a lot of productive conversations as well as advice, DVD shows etc. Robin would value feedback, especially quotes for use in reports to funders or publicity.
And the showing of Age of Stupid on Monday was a full house - every chair taken.
