Update on Transition Malvern Hills Waste Group
This Group has met twice and agreed that its main objectives are to:
- Help the Malvern community to move towards a zero waste lifestyle
- Create and promote local recycling and re-use solutions
- Educate and develop ideas on how to re-use materials creatively
- Stimulate a culture of re-use, repair and re-distribution
Much of the 'waste' being thrown away and landfilled is serviceable and could be used by someone else. In order to reduce this unnecessary waste, we are researching the possibility of starting a local exchange and re-use centre where materials and equipment that have not reached the end of their natural life can be donated and/or exchanged or sold for a nominal amount. We are also hoping to compile a directory of local businesses, organisations and charities that offer re-use, repair, re-distribution and recycling facilities for the more unusual materials and items that are not already included in the Malvern Hills District Council’s kerbside recycling scheme and Re-use Guide.
Report on Waste Not Want Not event held on 12 August
It was extremely gratifying to see a total of 34 members of the public come along to find out more about how they can reduce, re-use and recycle their household waste. Debra Parker, Recycling and Waste Management Officer at Malvern Hills District Council started the evening with an informative talk on plans for the future kerbside collection in the District, and her talk was followed by a lively question and answer session. Nathan Burlton updated us on the benefits and facilities offered by the expanding Malvern Freecycle network which has grown in only a few years to a membership of over 10,000. The evening closed with an enlightening and entertaining talk from Nigel Leach, a founding member of the Worcestershire Resource Exchange, our nearest Scrapstore located near Shrub Hill Station in Worcester.
Gareth Jones is the proprietor of a relatively new business located in Spring Lane, Court Reclamation and Salvage. CRS purchases any types of metal ranging from pots and pans to cars. Next time, instead of taking that old filing cabinet to the household tip, take it to CRS who will pay you the going rate – and save this valuable ‘waste’ from going to landfill. It is businesses such as CRS that you will be able to find in our new local directory which we anticipate will be available in spring 2010.
